Hawker Richardson Introduces

APEX u-Guard™ to Combat

In-Systems Damage

There is a growing awareness of the considerable expense that the average assembly plant must burden as a result of In-System Damage (chips, scratches dents, dings, etc). This is especially pronounced in industries such as automotive, white goods and aircraft, where final products are large and complex, or high value is added during assembly. One of the largest contributors to In-System Damage is incidental contact between power tools used to perform fastening operations and the product that is being assembled as it progresses down the line. Apex®, U.S. manufacturer of premier fastening tools preferred by end users worldwide, has introduced a new family of tools called u-Guard™ that virtually eliminates this damage from occurring.

Apex u-Guard tools have the tightest tolerances in the industry for a sure, exact fit with the fastener. The material selection and proprietary heat treat processes produce a tool that can withstand extreme torques throughout its durable life. The steel is isolated from external contact by a moulded skin that is able to spin independently of the contained tool. The skin is a proprietary elastomer blend that is soft enough to cushion blows from swinging tools, yet tough enough to resist punctures and endure shift after shift of operation with minimal wear. The elastomer skin also does not have the same limitations of a nylon-based cover material, which is not suitable for use in bodyworks (pre-paint) applications. And the free-spinning feature has been shown to have improved ergonomics for line workers by allowing them to contact the tool with reduced opportunity for injury.

The tamper-resistant design of Apex u-Guard is a guard against the potential hazards resulting from rotational friction. Through isolation, u-Guard ensures the integrity of the fastening operation without the damages and injuries that often occur. With its expanding line of sockets, extensions and bit holders, Apex u-Guard is revolutionizing the market for assembly tools.

The following images illustrate some of the benefits of using Apex u-Guard.

New Free-Spin Covers By APEX Revolutionize The Market For Anti-Mar Sockets & Sockets with Extensions

Apex Anti-Mar Free-Spin Covers for Sockets and Sockets with Extensions are revolutionizing the Power Tools industry by offering new and unique benefits to end users concerned with work surface protection. Apex has been designing protective covers for its tools for more than 5 years and is now introducing a field-replaceable product to cover sockets and sockets with extensions, making it more cost effective than competitors who require the tool to be modified. Anti-Mar Free-Spin Covers rotate independently of the tool for enhanced protection of painted, polished or delicate surfaces. These durable yet non-abrasive cover assemblies were designed to fit a multitude of different Apex sockets with common sizes stocked for immediate delivery.

The following images illustrate the benefits of using the Apex Free-Spin cover versus using a standard “pressed-on” cover and versus using no cover at all.

This field-replaceable feature allows the end user the flexibility to change covers independent of the socket as each will wear at different rates depending on the application. This translates into a realized cost savings in purchased materials.  The fact that the covers fit a multitude of socket and extension sizes results in savings in inventory costs. In addition the end user now has the ability to cover existing tools on the assembly line.

Apex Anti-Mar Free-Spin protective covers are ideal for the following applications: car interior, door, wheel, and exterior automotive assembly, white goods, final assembly, and sub-assembly in close proximity to wire harnesses.

A new brochure featuring the Anti-Mar Free-Spin protective covers is available from Hawker Richardson.
